Public awareness and involvement is important in the fight to end sex trafficking.
In 2019, there were 8,248 sex trafficking cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, and of the cases identified, 92 percent (7,171) were female, nearly 7 percent (527) were male, and about 1 percent (82) were gender minorities.
In that same year in Oregon, the National Human Trafficking Hotline (NHTH) received 197 calls from victims and survivors themselves and identified another 253 victims and survivors. In 2020, the NHTH received 240 calls from victims and survivors and confirmed an additional 119 cases of sex trafficking in our state alone. Additionally, the Register-Guard reported Lane County as among the top three counties (Multnomah and Clackamas) for child sex trafficking in Oregon (Brown, 2020).
We can do better for our children.
By talking about the issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation, we are closing the gap of misinformation and raising awareness, which is a first step in the fight to end it.
